Austempering:-
Austempering consist of the three steps.
- Austinitisation in the temperature range of 840-950 deg Celsius for a time to produce sufficient full austenite matrix.
- Rapid Cooling of the entire part to an Austempering to the range of 230-450 deg Celsius without any transformation.
- Isothermal Treatment at the austempering temperature at which during the transformation only bainitic ferrite forms in a favorable case.
Martempering of steel or cast iron consist of as follows
- Quenching from the austenitising temperature into a hot fluid medium like hot oil, molten salt above the Martensitic start temperature range(Ms-Point)
- Hold it in the quenching medium until the temperature throughout the steel substantially uniform.
- Cooling at moderate rate to prevent large difference in the surface temperature and core temperature.
